Although it began as a market town, it became a very important location with the arrival of the Great Western Railway, and a whole new Swindon sprang up. This forms the heart of modern Swindon and you’ll find plenty more to occupy you here, from the wonderful history detailed in the Steam Museum to the beautiful Town Gardens. Shoppers can spend the day finding great bargains at Swindon Designer Outlet, the Parade, the Brunel Centre and the nearby Tented Market, and there’s a great opportunity to introduce the kids to nature with Roves Farm and Butterfly World nearby.
Swindon knows how to lay on the entertainment, with a variety of festivals throughout the year including live music treats like Swindon Invincible, the Old Town Festival and the Kite Festival with lots more besides. Swindon Mela is a riot of colour in high summer, celebrating the arts, culture and dance of southern India. And while it’s not got a large population, the variety of restaurants, from Mexican to Persian (and lots in between) is more than enough to keep gourmet visitors happy.
